The Project
As our Nation seeks defenses against biological and chemical warfare agents, imperative facilities to research these agents will become more prevalent in the 21st Century. One such facility is underway for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - the Advanced Chemistry Laboratory in Edgewood, Maryland. The new Advanced Chemistry Laboratory will provide an elite group of scientists with a 102,000 square foot, state-of-the-art, super-toxic chemical research laboratory.
PK Role
Poole and Kent has teamed with Gaudreau, Inc. in a Joint Venture (Poole and Kent/Gaudreau, Inc. (J.V.) to design and build the Advanced Chemistry Laboratory. In addition to our role as the design/build General Contractor, Poole and Kent is also serving as the Mechanical Contractor on this project. In this role, Poole and Kent will self-perform the mechanical/plumbing, piping, and install the laboratory infrastructure and associated equipment. The Poole and Kent/Gaudreau team must address a unique combination of life-safety, health, environmental, and security challenges that will not only impact the facility’s users but also the community in which they work and ultimately, the Nation’s war-fighter.
Highlights/Challenges
At the onset of the project, the Poole and Kent/Gaudreau team performed an
in-depth review of mechanical systems and equipment manufacturers. The manufacturer selections provided substantial cost savings, without compromising the high-quality equipment requirements as specified by the Government. Additionally, our team has revised certain design parameters that maintain the desired function at reduced costs.
The Poole and Kent/Gaudreau team will continue to apply design methods and construction techniques that will sustain the integrity of the Advanced Chemistry Laboratory and eliminate costly alternatives.
We look forward to delivering the Advanced Chemistry Laboratory project to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and our great nation, in December 2005.
