The Project
As a result of BWI's extraordinary growth, the need for gate space is at a record high. In an effort to meet the needs of Southwest Airlines and provide more frequent service and additional destinations for passengers, a new improved Concourse A opens early in 2005, adding several new gates. When Concourse A is complete and it is connected with Pier B, the area will include 26 new gates. The Concourse will offer a baggage claim area, passenger hold rooms, ticket counter space and significantly increased food and shopping areas. This work is also being done to establish BWI as a Hub for Southwest Airlines.
PK Role
As the mechanical contractor, Poole and Kent is providing the complete mechanical package for this project including: plumbing, HVAC, duct work, mechanical insulation, building automation, and snow melt systems. Additionally, Poole and Kent will implement the tie-in into the existing central utility plant for Chilled Water and High Temperature Hot Water.
Highlights/Challenges
At Poole and Kent we continuously strive to achieve solutions that benefit the operation and integrity of mechanical systems, and provide a cost savings to the client. On this particular project, Poole and Kent was able to propose a route through the existing structure to reroute 3,000 linear feet of utility piping, revise interface locations and suggest some alternative materials of construction to minimize the impact costs and complete the work ahead of originally scheduled. Poole and Kent was able to diagnose (early in the RFI process) that the underground Sanitary and Storm Water Piping not comply with code. Poole and Kent worked collectively with the Engineer and inspectors to develop an acceptable system with a minimal financial impact.
We look forward to continuing our cooperating with BWI and the Maryland aviation system, in their quest to become the "Easy Come, Easy Go" gateway to the world
