The Project
The Johns Hopkins institution is a world-renowned leader in medical research and the treatment of the most acute diseases known to humankind. The Broadway Research Building is a facility that serves Johns Hopkins in the vital area of genetic medicine. The building is home to the Institute of Cell Engineering, Institute of Genetic Medicine and Laboratory Programs in Comparative Medicine and Basic Sciences. The advancements in genomic research have triggered the need for independent research facilities among prominent institutions such as Johns Hopkins.

The Broadway Research Building features six floors of bio-medical research laboratories, an underground vivarium, and administrative areas totaling 372,000 square feet, with mechanically and electrically designed systems for safety and energy efficiency.

The completion of this building is part of Johns Hopkins' master plan to redevelop the East Baltimore campus.

PK Role
Poole and Kent provided the complete mechanical and plumbing installation for the Broadway Research Building. The scope of work included a 50,000 square foot vivarium, which included heat, ventilation, water and lights that are computer controlled to ensure animals sustainability.

Highlights/Challenges
One of the most significant aspect's of Poole and Kent's performance on this project was the swift resolution of coordination issues, which were addressed in an almost immediate timeframe through on-site coordination meetings. Our participation during the entire mechanical system commissioning procedure was extremely significant in maintaining the project schedule, and was also a major contributing factor to the completion of the project.
