The Project
Human Genome Sciences is a pioneer in genomics and the discovery and development of new gene-based drugs to treat and cure disease. The Biological Science Facility was an addition to the existing Human Genome Facility, which is a small scale research facility used to study biological tissue and disease recovery. The new facility includes laboratories for processes which isolate disease, and evaluate treatments.
PK Role
Poole and Kent performed the mechanical contract for the plumbing, and HVAC system installations. The scope of work included furnishing and installing the following: 21 fans, 10 pumps, laboratory air compressor and vacuum pump, owner furnished equipment, including; (2) 300 HP (9600 MBH) boilers, (3) 250 ton chillers, 3 open cell cooling towers, 4 built up air handling units and a duplex condensate pump.
Highlights/Challenges
Poole and Kent's Project Team provided value engineering ultimately improving the design of the laboratory and enabling a more compatible work environment for researchers. Additionally, Poole and Kent assisted in the start-up and commissioning of the Owner furnished equipment installed on this project.
The Human Genome Sciences Biological Facility serves a very important civil duty to researchers who work avidly to develop interventions and treatments for the health of mankind. Poole and Kent was extremely proud to deliver this highly efficient facility to HGS and those who will benefit from its resources.
