The Project
The University of Maryland Comcast Arena is home to the University's nationally ranked basketball team - the "Terrapins". Comcast, a national cable company, has entered into an agreement with the University of Maryland and the Maryland Stadium Authority to associate their name with the Arena. The Comcast Arena is 450,000 square feet and seats 17,000 fans. The arena features spas, hydrotherapy pools, volleyball, wrestling, weight room, practice gym, and sky boxes.
PK Role
In our role as the design/build mechanical contractor, Poole and Kent assisted with the design and installation of the mechanical systems, including: HVAC (which included a steam-to-hot water heating system), plumbing, and utility piping. The Arena is air-conditioned through both an electric centrifugal chiller and a steam turbine-driven chiller to optimize energy efficiency.
Highlights/Challenges
Poole and Kent worked closely with the General Contractor and Engineer to ensure the design of the mechanical systems would meet the Owner's expectations. In February 2003 the Comcast Arena project earned the AGC 2003 Washington Contractor Award for new construction. In the General Contractor's acceptance of this award, Poole and Kent's workmanship was recognized and commended in a letter of commendation.
