The Project
The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research is a four-level structure in which the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical services on all levels support more than 120 laboratories. Both the Army and the Navy will perform research at this facility. The research laboratories are a BL-3 classification, which means the laboratory can isolate and study nearly all infectious diseases. In addition to 474,000 square feet of laboratory and administrative area, there is an interstitial space above each floor, which doubles the square footage of the building. Two large and two small animal operating rooms with ancillary spaces serve the veterinarians. These four operating rooms are the equivalent of operating rooms in regular hospitals.
PK Role
As the mechanical contractor, Poole and Kent performed the installation of the following systems/equipment: (1) 65-ton Chiller for cooling of Animal Rooms, (3) 1,100-ton Chillers, (3) 700-hp Water Tube Boilers, 100 % outside air system featuring 10 AHU’s at 78,000 CFM (avg.), medical and special gases, laboratory services including: reverse osmosis and deionized water, vacuum, compressed air, acid waste systems, animal watering system, animal flushing system, process condenser water systems, and a radioactive waste system .
Highlights/Challenges
Only through the teamwork of a "partnered" project and the timely resolution of numerous coordination issues was The Poole and Kent Corporation able to face the challenge of installing the miles of pipe and duct necessary for the completion of this complex project.
